about

"He Mandhu" or Héman dubh is a Scottish Gaelic "orain-luaidh" or "waulking song" from Lewis in the Western Isles. Waulking songs come from the old tradition where groups of women would sing call and response songs to accompany the the work of waulking or softening of newly woven tweed cloth. Here He Mandhu is given an Afro Latin twist, with two new folk melodies and this time played unusually in 6/8.

lyrics

Héman dubh
's truagh nach tigeadh - it's a pity that this doesn't come
Héman dubh
Siud gam iarraidh - to fetch me
Héman dubh
Gille 's litir - a messenger and a letter
Hì ri oro
Each is diallaid - a horse and a saddle
Héman dubh hi ri oro
hó ró o hù ó
